Rescue lost travellers and recruit them as workers/villagers
What if you could find lost travellers on some isles? Maybe you see smoketrails or some other kind of SOS sign, then fight some mobs or find a difficult way to get to them. Or they are in a cage imprisoned by enemies.
When you manage to rescue them, you bring them home on your ship. Once they are in your village, you can assign them a sleeping place and some kind of work, like managing inventories, collecting ressources etc.
It could be combined with a concept of basic needs and special needs. Like every recruited beeing needs a bed, a dining room all in an own house. Without that they wont stay and work for you. If you fulfill special needs, like fancy deco, better food, better bed etc. they unlock additional skills or stats, like working faster or with less mistakes.
With such a feature, every village you build on your bioms remains valuable and a place you love to visit regulary, to look after the villagers, collect, what they build, improve their homes and so on.

This could be cool especially if we found other Echoes? The notes left around biomes seem to indicate they knew they weren't the first and likely wouldn't be the last. Maybe the other Echoes are in limbo somewhere and could also be rescued from that state? Possibly every few spirits that are rescued gives a clue location to help encourage more exploration of the biomes without having to slap spirits all over the place? Could also be a good use for leftover strands (I always end up with so many unused) and maybe a construct's gift? Maybe they could offer assistance or specialized crafting and/or colored versions of armor that they'd be wearing so we could see it ahead of time. We already have pigment in the game but it's not seemingly used for a whole lot yet, despite billions of flower petals ending up in your inventory. I could go on forever probably... XD
